Why Did The Yellow Team CSK Choose Zaheer Khan?
Dhoni was part of the process that led to Zaheer Khan’s appointment at CSK. According to Kasi Viswanathan, he suggested Zaheer’s name for the role.
The CSK management team also backed the choice. Rupa Gurunath and captain Ruturaj Gaikwad were among those involved in the discussions.
Zaheer’s previous IPL experience was also a factor. He worked with Mumbai Indians in cricket management and later joined Lucknow Super Giants as a mentor.
CSK also pointed to his work with young cricketers. His experience as a fast bowler and his work in mentoring players were considered useful for the team.
Zaheer Khan’s IPL and International Experience
Zaheer brings 14 years of profound international cricket experience to the CSK coaching setup.
He represented India in:
- 92 Tests
- 200 ODIs
- 17 T20s
He was also part of India’s 2011 ODI World Cup-winning team and finished that tournament with 21 wickets, the joint-highest tally.
His IPL playing career included 100 matches and 102 wickets. He represented franchises including Mumbai Indians, Delhi Daredevils, and Royal Challengers Bengaluru.
After retirement, Zaheer moved into cricket management, first with Mumbai Indians and later with Lucknow Super Giants.
Why Zaheer’s Bowling Experience Matters for CSK
Zaheer’s long experience as a fast bowler was also considered when CSK picked him for the head coach role. He played international cricket for 14 years and took 102 wickets in 100 IPL matches.
CSK managing director Kasi Viswanathan said Zaheer has mentored many young cricketers, especially fast bowlers. The franchise also sees his experience working with younger players as useful for the team.
For CSK, Zaheer will now have the chance to work with the bowling group as head coach and use his experience to help the players during IPL 2027.
CSK’s Recent IPL Struggles
Zaheer takes over at a time when CSK are coming off a difficult run.
The team has failed to reach the IPL playoffs for three consecutive seasons. CSK finished eighth in the 2026 league stage, and Fleming stepped down as head coach after the season.
Fleming had been CSK’s head coach since 2009 and guided the franchise to five IPL titles. His departure therefore brings an end to one of the longest coaching associations in the IPL.
Zaheer will now start work with the CSK squad for IPL 2027 and make plans for the season ahead.
